FDA wants new regulatory framework for CBD use

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called for a new regulatory framework to ensure the safe use of the cannabis compound CBD, reports Reuters.

The FDA said it would not be making any new guidance on the use of CBD and stated that it would be working with Congress to develop a new regulatory framework. According to Reuters, the agency said that the current safety standards for dietary supplements or food additives are not appropriate for cannabidiol, based on data and studies it had reviewed and conducted.
“We have not found adequate evidence to determine how much CBD can be consumed, and for how long, before causing harm,” FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Janet Woodcock said.
“A new regulatory pathway for CBD is needed that balances individuals’ desire for access to CBD products with the regulatory oversight needed to manage risks,” the agency said.
Data available to the FDA has not shown how products containing CBD could meet the safety standard for substances in animal food either and therefore the agency would not be providing new rules allowing the use of CBD in animal food, reports Reuters.
