FDA warns retailers on Juul

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cracked down on US retailers for selling or marketing e-cigarettes such as Juul to underage teens, CNN reported.

The FDA has sent 40 warning letter to retailers for violating laws related to sales of e-cigarettes and in particular Juul, which is an extremely popular brand among teens, according to the report. In an effort to find out why Juul is so popular among teens, the FDA requested product marketing and research documents from Juul Labs.
According to the report, commissioner of the FDA, Dr Scott Gottlieb, wrote in a statement, “We don't yet fully understand why these products are so popular among youth. But it's imperative that we figure it out, and fast.”
Gottlieb said that the extensive amount of reports of teens using Juul products “are of great public health concern.”
Victoria Davis, a Juul spokesperson responded to the FDA’s public statement. Davis was quoted as saying Juul Lab “agrees with the FDA that illegal sales of our product to minors are unacceptable. We already have in place programmes to prevent and, if necessary, identify and act upon these violations at retail and online marketplaces.”
According to the report, Davis said, “We are working with the FDA, lawmakers, parents and community leaders to combat underage use, and we will continue working with all interested parties to keep our product away from youth.”
Juul Lab said that it would "take additional decisive action by actively supporting state and federal initiatives to raise the minimum age to 21+ to purchase tobacco products as part of an initial investment of USD 30 million over the next three years dedicated to independent research, youth and parent education and community engagement efforts,” CNN reported.
