Finland imposes new anti-smoking laws

On 1 May, tightened anti-smoking laws took effect in Finland. Brand images and logos must be removed from packages of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and refill containers, reports Business Standard.

The unified package formats have a transition time until May 2023. Finland has gradually banned smoking since 1976. Smoking was banned in public transport, as well as the sale of tobacco to people under 16. The ban was later extended to all public indoor areas, including restaurants. Since May, the ban also applies to public beaches and playgrounds.
While flavours such as menthol or strawberry have been banned for years, the new amendment also prohibits products that allow consumers to alter the flavour themselves, the report said. Existing stock can be sold.
Establishment owners can maintain smoking rooms, but laws require low-pressuring and exhaust ventilation that exhausts the air through the roof of the building.
The legislative change is aimed to reduce the appeal of tobacco products, especially to young people, and to protect young children from second-hand smoke. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, it is also intended to reduce littering and environmental damage related to smoking.
