IRELAND
First medical cannabis clinic opens

The country’s first medical cannabis clinic, Medicann, says it has already been “inundated” with patients eager to know if they are eligible, reports the Irish Mirror.

The goal of the clinic is to cover “all conditions treatable with medicinal cannabis” to “improve the quality of life for patients”.
In 2021, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly cleared the path for medical consultants allowing them to register themselves and their patients to the Medical Cannabis Access Programme (MCAP), a big step towards the ongoing delivery of medical cannabis, reports the Irish Mirror.
Cannabis is known to be useful in the treatment of several conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and many more due to its ability to reduce chronic pain and side effects such as nausea and vomiting.
Medicann first launched in Jersey and went on to open clinics in Guernsey and the Isle of Man with Ireland being the next location to open. CEO Gary Whipp has a background in technology but has been studying cannabis for five years and is a qualified cannabis consultant.
“We’ll have a physical clinic and we’ll have an online secure telehealth clinic, the physical clinic will become more and more popular as we train more local doctors,” Whipp told the Irish Mirror.
“As far as Irish law is concerned, we have the MCAP programme, which offers a rebate for certain medication and certain conditions, which we will be able to prescribe for, but then we also have what’s called a ministerial licence,” he said.
The consultant said that medical cannabis is tested rigorously to make sure it is of top quality and is a far cry from recreational cannabis, reports the Irish Mirror.
