Uruguay has become the first Latin American country to adopt plain packaging for tobacco products, Tobacco-Free Kids reported.
Tobacco companies will have one year to comply with the new plain packaging law in Uruguay, according to the report. Uruguay has already introduced other tobacco control policies such as 100 per cent smoke-free laws, graphic health warnings, advertising bans and higher taxes on tobacco products which has resulted in decreased smoking prevalence among youth by 65 per cent and 28 per cent among adults, Tobacco-Free Kids reported.
Australia, the UK, France, Ireland, New Zealand and Norway have already implemented plain packaging.
