Flavour ban could see vapers return to smoking

A recent survey has found that one in five vapers would return to smoking if favours were to e banned, reports the Irish Independent.

The survey from Red C Research and Marketing commissioned by Respect Vapers, a group that represents people that used vaping to quit smoking, comes as the government plans to restrict the sale of flavoured vapes.
90 per cent of those questioned thought that a ban on flavours would lead to a black market while over 75 per cent say it could lead to more young people smoking. One in five said they would start smoking again should flavours be banned and around half said they would source flavours from outside of Ireland should the ban be introduced, reports the Irish Independent.
98 per cent of the former smokers said that vaping helped them to quit cigarettes and 85 per cent said it had helped them to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoked. The survey also shows that 37 per cent are open to a ban on flavours that are specifically attractive to youngsters such as candy or dessert flavours.
“It would be wrong of the Government and the EU to ban flavours because of its misguided belief that they are a gateway to teen smoking,” said Michael Dwyer, who quit his 30-year smoking habit with flavoured vapes.
“The new restrictions preventing the sale of vapes to under 18s will be more effective than a ban on flavoured vapes. Stakeholders need to focus on how we can encourage more people to quit tobacco.”
