Ghana completes ratification process

In addition to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), Ghana has also acceded to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products, reports GhanaWeb.

Described as a global solution to a global problem, this protocol was developed in response to the increasing illicit trade in tobacco products, which often takes place across borders.
The overall objective of the Protocol is to eliminate all forms of illicit trade in tobacco products through a comprehensive package of measures that includes combating illicit trade by preventing it and encouraging law enforcement action, while providing the legal basis for international cooperation.
After an “extensive process” that included a series of stakeholder consultations led by the Ministry of Health and the Food and Drug Authority, Ghana has joined the list of countries to have finalized the ratification of the Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products Protocol.
The legalislative instrument was successfully deposited with the Treaty Division of the United Nations Secretariat on 22 October 2021. Thus, the Protocol will enter into full force for Ghana on 20 January 2022 in accordance with the provisions of the Protocol, the report said.
It contains a whole range of measures to combat illicit trafficking through the prevention of trafficking and the promotion of law enforcement, while providing the legal basis for international cooperation.
The protocol also aims to secure the supply chain of tobacco products through licensing, due diligence and record-keeping. In this way, it aims to create a global tobacco product tracking and tracing system that will enable governments to effectively track tobacco products from manufacture to the first point of sale.
