Gold Leaf Tobacco (GLT) lost more than USD 800,000 (EUR 746,000) due to a court-mandated recall of its RG cigarettes, however the brand has been relaunched as Rudland & George, the Zimbabwe Independent reported.
Last autumn the High Court stopped distribution of GLT’s RG brand in response to a complaint by Savannah Tobacco, which manufactures Remington Gold under license in Zimbabwe, a brand popularly known as RG, the Independent said. GLT has challenged the decision. Rudland & George is manufactured in South Africa, although there are plans to open a factory in Harare, the Independent said.
GLT reportedly has set goals of capturing 20 per cent of the Zimbabwean market and to become the largest supplier in southern Africa. The company is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
