The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the government to file an action taken report (ATR) in four weeks against educational institutions which are allowing the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards (91 meters) of their institutions.
Following a written petition from the Cancer Patients' Aid Association, a high court division bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar on Monday directed the government to inspect and prosecute educational institutions which do not comply with Section 6 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003 which prohibits the sale of any tobacco products to minors and within 100 yards from any educational institution.
