Group educates others about e-cig risks

The P.E.I. Tobacco Reduction Alliance has launched an education campaign to shift positive perceptions about vaping that dismiss the potential risks associated with e-cigarette products, CBC reported.

The organisation said that it aims to educate individuals about the potential risks of e-cigarette products, which are generally not well understood, CBC reported. The alliance says that young individuals are, in particular, unaware of the risks that come with vaping.
Julia Hartley, co-ordinator of the P.E.I. Lung Association, and a member of the alliance, was quoted as saying that vaping releases toxic chemicals such as metals and flavourings, as well as ultra-fine particles, which “can really harm your lungs over time.” Hartley added that nicotine is specifically an issue for young people, “whose brains are still developing”.
In addition to that, Hartley said that the alliance would also be covering the topic of vape pods that contain high levels of nicotine, “which can contain the same amount of nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes.”
A federal government study in Canada in autumn found that 26 per cent of P.E.I. high school students had vaped in the previous month, according to the report.
