The National Health and Family Planning Commission plans to work with other agencies to press the government to raise duties on tobacco products and increase cigarette prices, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Tobacco products in China are cheap compared to many other countries, and rising incomes have made them easier to afford, the news agency said. The push to raise the price for consumers and thereby cut demand was announced by health commission official Yao Hongwen, according to Xinhua.
