Health chief warns of new NGP regulation

Health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said new legislation could be on the way for e-cigarettes and other next generation tobacco products (NGPs) in comments made to news site Euractiv.

“I see possibilities to encourage our agents to look into electronic cigarettes, and how to go in the direction of stronger regulation […] stopping advertising and online sales,” the EU commissioner for health and food safety was quoted as saying.
He singled out heated tobacco products as not being covered by the EU's tobacco directive. “The tobacco industry is doing a lot in the use of new electronic devices. They are using cigarettes with heating instruments. They are new and they are not covered by directives,” he said.
The EU health chief made the comments on the sidelines of an event on health policy. In the interview he reportedly lashed out at the tobacco industry and said it was trying to block the new track-and-trace system for tobacco products being developed as part of the EU's Tobacco Products Directive.
*Euractiv initially reported “tough new legislation” was on the way for heated tobacco products and later corrected the story.
