BAT (Uganda) sold 1.72 billion cigarettes and made an annual contribution to the national exchequer of USgs 44.7 trillion in 1996, according to company sources
Cigarette sales amounted to 1.6 billion in 1995, up from 1.5 billion in 1994 and 1.4 billion in 1993. In 1996, annual leaf production reached 6345 tonnes and an estimated 8 120 tonnes is expected for 1997. Tobacco is mainly grown in the West Nile, Gulu, Apac, Mubende, Hoima, Masindi, Kibale and Kiboga regions. Burley tobacco is exported to Europe, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo and other African countries.
