IQOS authorised as Modified Risk Tobacco Product

Philip Morris' IQOS Tobacco Heating System has become the second ever product to be authorised as a MRTP by the US Food and Drug Administration, according to a press release by the FDA.

IQOS and the accompanying Marlboro Heatsticks also became the first tobacco product range to receive “exposure modification” orders which “permits the marketing of a product as containing a reduced level of or presenting a reduced exposure to a substance or as being free of a substance when the issuance of the order is expected to benefit the health of the population,” according to the FDA.
The IQOS device heats tobacco-filled sticks and generates an aerosol containing nicotine. Data submitted to the FDA shows that marketing IQOS products as an MRTP could help addicted adult smokers move away from combustible cigarettes and ultimately reduce exposure to harmful chemicals, according to the FDA. The FDA will closely follow up on how IQOS will continue to be marketed and make sure the products do not lead to an increase in us among youths.
“We’re delighted that the FDA authorized IQOS to be marketed as a modified-risk tobacco product. This authorization gives PM USA an opportunity to communicate additional benefits of switching to IQOS and this decision is an important step for adult smokers,” said Billy Gifford, Chief Executive Officer of Altria. “IQOS is a key part of that future as we develop our portfolio of FDA-authorized, non-combustible products and actively switch adult smokers to them.”
