North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said an initial assessment shows the state’s tobacco crop likely was hardest hit by hurricane Irene, according to Farm Futures.
"The tobacco crop looks to be probably the worst hit because the damage is so wide-spread and there is wind damaged and water damaged with a lot of tobacco blown down on the ground and blown off," Troxler said in a story on the publication’s website dated 30 Aug.
The biggest problem for North Carolina producers is the loss of electrical power, according to Troxler. (pi)
