Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) has completed its annual pre-purchase radioactive material testing of Japan’s domestic tobacco leaf, according to a company press release.

The company has been testing Japanese domestic leaf for traces of radioactivity since 2011 after an accident at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The testing is carried out pre-purchase and is done so with the full support of the tobacco growers.
This year’s Burley tobacco has now been fully tested with the result that none of the tobacco leaf has traces of radioactive material, states the company press release. This exceeds the JT standard value (Radioactive cesium: 100Bq/kg). The company also stated that it would continue to test the domestic leaf tobacco after purchase and at each stage of the production process several times.
