JT launches new environment plan

Japan Tobacco (JT) has announced that it has launched a new group-wide environment plan that will be based on raising sustainability measures to reduce its Greenhouse (GHG) emissions and double its proportion of renewable electricity by 2030, according to a company press release.

JT’s new plan also includes reducing natural resources such as water associated with its tobacco business by 15 per cent and waste by 20 per cent by 2030. And, the company said that it plans on replacing all wood from natural forests used in the tobacco curing process of its directly contracted growers with renewable fuel sources, according to JT’s press release. In addition to that, the company said it aims to increase the proportion of renewable electricity that it uses to 100 per cent by 2050.
JT launched its first Group Environment Plan in 2014 and reached and exceeded its initial goal to reduce GHG emissions by 20 per cent in 2017, which was three years ahead of schedule, the company wrote.
Chigusa Ogawa, senior vice president of sustainability management at JT commented on the new plan, saying, “We are looking forward to meeting this new plan’s objectives, which reflect changes in our business, societal expectations, and growing scientific understanding of the environment.
“Our new targets go beyond our current plan, and address a broader range of issues that affect not only our operations, but also key elements of our value chain.”
