JTI, UK’s biggest selling tobacco firm is being probed by Public Health England over new cigarettes that consumers say taste just like menthols, The Mirror reported.
Menthol cigarettes were banned from the UK and the EU on 20 May as part of efforts to prevent young people from starting smoking with menthols.
According to the Mirror, seven of the most popular brands are being tested, including Sterling New Superkings Green, Benson & Hedges New Superkings Green and Mayfair New Green. Laboratory analysts are testing new cigarette products with a "fresh" taste to see if they violate the law, which states that products may not have any added "characteristic flavour".
Deborah Arnott, of Action on Smoking & Health, said: “Smokers believe they’re still smoking menthol and that’s what counts. In the words of the proverb, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck.”
JTI, which makes GBP 650,000 (USD 820,272) profit daily from its new range, according to the report, said: “We are confident that all our products are fully compliant with UK law.”
