Japan Tobacco International (JTI) followed Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco in suing the UK government to block introduction of plain packaging for tobacco products, said Packaging Business Review.
Plain packaging would severely constrict branding and mandate a uniform colour for cigarette packages that also would carry large graphic health warnings. Philip Morris and BAT filed suit in the High Court of Justice, claiming infringement of intellectual property rights under English and EU statutes.
