Juul pulls flavoured products

Juul Labs said it would discontinue the sale of most flavours, but that products with mint, tobacco and menthol flavours would remain on sale at retail outlets. Retail orders for Juul pods with the flavours mango, fruit, crème and cucumber would no longer be accepted after 13 November, Juul Labs Chief Executive Kevin Burns announced.
The New York Times said reported estimates of the sale of these flavours accounted for some 45 percent of the company’s retail sales, adding that the announcement was “the most significant sign of retrenchment” by an industry facing blame for a new threat to public health.
The San Francisco-based company, which holds around 70 per cent of the US e-cigarette market, made the decision as it faced mounting pressure from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to address high levels of nicotine addiction among young Americans that do not use tobacco. The agency is expected to announce new measures to address e-cigarette use among teens, including a ban on flavoured products being sold in petrol stations and convenience stores, the newspaper reported.
The FDA had in September given Juul Labs and other manufacturers 60 days to submit plans to limit the use of their products by minors.
Burns said in a statement to the press that the company had never intended for young people to use its device. “But intent is not enough. The numbers are what matter and the numbers tell us underage use of e-cigarettes is a problem,” the newspaper quoted Burns as saying.
FDA Commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb recognised the voluntary action taken by the company but tweeted, “Voluntary action is no substitute for regulatory steps #FDA will soon take. But we want to recognise actions by Juul today and urge all manufacturers to immediately implement steps to start reversing these trends.”
Unpublished government data shows at least three million middle and high school pupils use e-cigarettes, The New York Times said.
