A group of Kentucky farmers has filed a class-action suit against Universal Leaf North America that alleges the merchant failed to honor contracts to buy burley tobacco worth millions of dollars, the Associated Press reports.
The suit filed in Harrison Circuit Court seeks monetary damages for the 2010 crop year and alleges hundreds of farmers lost money when Universal Leaf agents refused to accept their tobacco, the news agency said in a story citing the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Universal Leaf North America is a subsidiary of Universal Corporation, based in Richmond, Virginia. (pi)
