King-size cigarettes now feature health warnings

From now on, tobacco manufacturers must make sure that every king-size cigarette for sale in Canada features a health warning on the actual cigarette, reports CTV News.

The health warning must be printed on the filter of each cigarette in English and French and must warn users about their ability to cause impotence, leukaemia and organ damage.
Canada is the first country in the world to require companies to print warnings directly onto every single cigarette. King-size products are the first the rule was imposed for, with regular-size cigarettes to follow on 31 January 2025. According to CTV News, retailers can carry king-size cigarettes without the new labels until 31 July 2024, and regular cigarettes until 30 April 2025.
Once the measure has been fully implemented, every cigarette sold in Canada will feature one of the following six warnings:

Cigarettes damage your organs;
Cigarettes cause cancer;
Tobacco smoke harms children;
Cigarettes cause impotence;
Cigarettes cause leukaemia;
Poison in every puff.

“It’s going to prompt discussion, not just people on their smoke breaks, but children at home,” said Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society, in an interview with CTVNews.ca. “Different messages resonate with different people,” he said. “Impotence will resonate with some people, ‘Poison in every puff’ will resonate with others.”
The Canadian Cancer Society hopes the new rules will help to reduce smoking to 5 per cent by 2035.
