The Latvian government decided on Tuesday to follow the directives proposed by the health ministry. Thus, graphic health warnings on cigarette packs will be introduced.
Smoking bans are also to be introduced at universities and other public buildings. Smoking in public buildings had previously been allowed in separate rooms in Latvia. These are to be eventually abolished. Smoking will also be restricted in parks, at beaches and playgrounds.
The future introduction of graphic health warnings has caused the Latvian association of tobacco manufacturers to protest against the measure, describing it as “impossible to follow.” Cigarette packs without graphic health warnings can no longer be sold starting in October 2009.
