Representative David Cicilline and 34 other House Democrats sent a letter to Labor Secretary Thomas Perez seeking a ban on children working on tobacco farms, the Associated Press said.
Cicilline has a bill in Congress seeking to amend existing legislation to prohibit children under 18 from work where they have direct contact with tobacco, the AP said. A May report by Human Rights Watch said three-quarters of the children it interviewed who worked on tobacco farms reported vomiting, nausea and other symptoms consistent with nicotine poisoning, which is often called green tobacco sickness.
