Less smokers in Beijing

The smoking population has decreased by 1.1 percentage points to 3.99 million in Beijing since June 2015, Xinhuanet reported.

The Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning reported that the number of smokers has decreased by 200,000 over the past two and a half years. This decline coincides with Beijing’s smoking ban, which has been effective since 1 June 2015 for indoor public places, workplaces and public transportation, according to Xinhuanet.
In 2017, 95 per cent of locations that were inspected followed the smoking ban, which is higher than the 77 percent reported in mid-2015. In Beijing, 7.4 million smokers have received services to help quit smoking from medical institutions, and a total of 61 hospitals have opened smoking cessation clinics, Xinhuanet reported.
Liu Zejun, from the Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, was quoted as saying: "We will intensify supervision in 2018 and continue to conduct undercover and targeted inspections. We also encourage the public to report to us if they see any violation."
