Less youths using e-cigs

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data from the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) which shows less US youths are using e-cigarettes, according to an FDA press release.

The survey shows that, in comparison with 2019, 1.8 million fewer youths in the US are using e-cigarettes. According to the FDA this good news however the focus must remain on the 3.6 million who are still actively using e-cigarettes. Data from the 2020 NYTS revealed that 26.5 per cent of high school and 15.2 per cent of middle school e-cig users are turning to disposable e-cigarettes – an alarming rise according to the FDA. In addition, 8 out of 10 of the young e-cigarette users reported using flavoured products such as fruit, mint, candy and menthol.
The results of the survey coincided with the premarket review submission deadline which will see a robust scientific evaluation by the FDA of all new and existing tobacco products on the market.
“Scientific review of new products is a critical part of how we carry out our mission to protect the public—especially kids—from the harms associated with tobacco use. Companies must demonstrate that each product meets the applicable statutory criteria for receiving marketing authorization, such as whether marketing the product is appropriate for the protection of the public health,” the press release stated.
The FDA will also be taking enforcement actions against any ENDS product that continues to be sold without having been submitted for the premarket review.
