Medical cannabis regulation decided

Mexico’s President has signed off on new rules to regulate the use of medicinal cannabis allowing pharmaceutical companies to begin research on cannabis products, reports Reuters.

The country has taken a huge step towards creating the world’s largest legal cannabis market with the new regulation, which was signed off by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
According to the new rules, companies that wish to research cannabis products must get permission from COFEPRIS, the Mexican health regulator and must comply with strict rules for sowing, cultivation and harvesting the cannabis. All research must be carried out in strictly controlled and independent laboratories, reports Reuters.
“The standard of regulation is very, very high,” said Luisa Conesa, a lawyer and pro-cannabis activist who spearheaded legal challenges that led to decriminalization of medical cannabis. He continued to explain that the regulation is only aimed at pharmaceutical companies and not private patients. In addition, exports of Mexican-grown cannabis are forbidden.
According to Reuters, legalisation of the recreational use of marijuana is also in the final stages with the bill expected to pass in the next period of Congress.
