The ban on menthol in tobacco will extend flavour restrictions to 95 per cent of of the market and prohibit sales of mentholated cigarettes, blunt wraps and most cigars, the government said.

Health Canada said it has finalised the amendment to add a menthol ban to the Tobacco Act. A public comment period on the proposed ban elicited 131 submissions, mostly in favour, Health Canada said. Banning menthol builds on previous actions to remove flavours like chocolate or bubble gum because of their appeal to youth and to prohibit certain additives in the products now subject to a menthol ban.
“By banning menthol in most tobacco products, in addition to flavours previously prohibited, we are taking another important step in the fight against youth smoking," said Health Minister Jane Philpott.
