Michailidis Group opens new factory

Greek company Leaf Tobacco A. Michailidis opened a new tobacco processing plant at Sandanski, Bulgaria.

The EUR 9.5 million plant has a production capacity of four to six tons per hour and will supply the company's central production site of in Polykastro, Greece, where final processing, packaging and boxing takes place.
The Sandanski plant will conduct the preliminary processing of Bulgarian and Greek tobacco of mixed medium and lower quality, while higher quality tobacco is dispatched to the Polykastro plant to supplement the tobacco processed there, said the company in a press release.
The new factory was inaugurated on Saturday by Theodoros Pangalos, the deputy prime minister of the Greek government and Traicho Traikov, the Bulgarian minister for the economy, energy and tourism.
Leaf Tobacco A. Michailidis Group has been operating a production unit  at Sandanski since 1996 and acquired tobacco processing factory Sandanski BT in February 2007 for BGN 2.3 million (EUR 1.2 million) from Bulgartabac Holding.
The group is the forth largest tobacco processing company in the world, operating production units in seven countries and employing 702 permanent staff. (ci/pi)
