A draft proposal by the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry would completely ban indoors smoking in stadiums but is “somewhat ambiguous” about restaurants and hotels, the Japan Times reported.
Tighter restrictions on smoking in public places were proposed ahead of the Olympics in 2020, the newspaper said. Although a total ban is proposed for stadiums, government offices and welfare institutions, the language on curbs in restaurants, offices and hotels states only that smoking will be prohibited “in principle,” the newspaper said. Both indoors and outdoors smoking would be banned at schools and medical facilities. The legislation could land before the Diet as early as next year, the Times said.
