More tobacco companies may soon face tax evasion probes following a complaint filed in March against the country’s oldest tobacco company, Mighty Corp, the Manila Bulletin said.
“We have a lot of cases … it just happened that these teams caught (Mighty) first,” Finance Assistant Secretary Paola Alvarez said, as reported by the Bulletin. Mighty Corp is under investigation for allegedly using false tax stamps on cigarettes, thereby avoiding payment on PHP 9.5 billion (EUR 179.2 million) in duty.
