MPs urge government to review smoking ban

Three MPs have joined forces with campaigners to call for the smoking ban in UK pubs and clubs to be relaxed, reports BBC News.

A cross-party group of MPs – Conservative Greg Knight, Lib Dem John Hemming and Labour's Roger Godsiff  – yesterday hosted a reception for the Save Our Pubs & Clubs campaign at the House of Commons.
The campaigners argue that the existing law is excessive and aim at winning support from more MPs and peers. They say the smoking ban should be reviewed and relaxed to allow proprietors to create a separate room for smokers if they choose.
Supporters of the Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign include the think tanks Progressive Vision and the Adam Smith Institute, the campaign group Forest, which fights for greater freedom for smokers, and the Clubs and Institute Union, which represents more than 2,000 working-men's clubs.
The smoking ban was introduced in England in July 2007. Scotland's ban was introduced in March 2006, followed by Wales and Northern Ireland in April 2007. The campaigners say that three years after introducing a smoking ban, Scotland had lost 467 pubs (7.1 per cent of the total), Wales 274 (7.3 per cent) and England 4,148 (7.6 per cent). (pi)
