President Dilma Rousseff on Thursday signed a law that includes a ban on smoking in all enclosed public spaces and advertising, as well as larger health warnigs.

The new federal law requires all enclosed workplaces and public places to be smoke-free, bans tobacco advertising at point of sale, and increases tobacco taxes. It amends a 1996 law which allowed smoking in specially designated, ventilated areas.
The new law also requires large health warnings on both sides of cigarette packs. Currently, graphic warnings cover the entire back of the pack, but there is no warning on the front.
New norms must be regulated by Congress to set the fines to punish violators, the official Agencia Brasil said.
The smoking ban in enclosed spaces was already in effect in states like Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Parana. (pi)
