New anti-tobacco plan unveiled

The government of South Korea has unveiled its "tobacco endgame" plan, which calls for the introduction of plain packaging for all cigarettes and more graphic warnings to encourage people to quit smoking, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The comprehensive project, which was reached by the public health policy review committee, aims to reduce the smoking rate for men significantly from 38.1 per cent, the report said. Since 2008, the smoking prevalence among men in the country has been falling steadily with the government wanting the figure to fall to lower than 29 per cent by 2022.
Under the new plan, the National Health Promotion Act will be revised so that all cigarette packages have the same design, making it impossible for tobacco companies to promote their products with appealing and distinctive images and logos. The coverage of graphic health warnings will increase from 50 per cent to 75 per cent, the report said.
According to the ministry, indoor smoking areas will be banned from 2025, with all products containing nicotine being classified as tobacco goods and subject to stricter restrictions. The government will set up designated outdoor smoking areas in 10,000 places to prevent people from smoking in the streets.
