New bill to restrict nicotine levels in e-cigs

US Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi has announced that a new bill was introduced which would restrict nicotine content in e-cigarette products to no more than 20 milligrams per millilitre, CNN reported.

The new legalisation mirrors the European Union’s 20 milligrams per millilitre cap on nicotine concentration in e-liquids, the report said.
The United States currently does not have a national restriction on e-liquid nicotine content and some products have several times that amount, including Juul’s 5 per cent pods which contain 59 mg/ml, according to the report. CNN reported that Juul maintains that the nicotine strength and the number of puffs in a 5 per cent pod is designed to replace one pack of cigarettes. CNN said it contacted Juul for comment on this matter.
If the bill passes, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would also be able to lower the restriction even further if necessary, the report said. “Capping the concentration of nicotine in e-cigarettes is integral to ending the youth vaping epidemic by making these products less addictive, less appealing to youth, and less harmful to public health,” said Krishnamoorthi.
Dr Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says nicotine concentrations have increased in recent years making newer products nicotine levels “very addictive,“ CNN reported.
