The government of Quebec decided to impose stricter controls on the advertising and sale of tobacco products.
The new rules, which will go into effect on 31 May, state that print tobacco ads must feature a new, more prominent health warning, that they must be in black and white only and that they can no longer take up the whole page, or be featured on the first or last pages of a magazine or newspaper.
New regulations will also affect advertising in stores; and cigarillos will be sold only in packets of 10, or for at least CAD 5.00 (USD 5.05).
Quebec’s government did not ban smoking in cars with children, as was demanded by anti-smoking campaigners. Nova Scotia and Ontario have already implemented such a ban. (pi)
