Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced that the government will introduce a new tax of ZAR 2.90 (USD 0.19) on vaping products from January next year, reports allafrica.
The Minister also announced that excise duties on alcohol and tobacco will increase by between 4.5 and 6.5 per cent. A pack of cigarettes will cost about ZAR 1.03 more; 25 grammes of pipe tobacco will cost ZAR 0.37 more; and the price of a 23-gramme cigar will increase by ZAR 6.77. "Government also proposes to introduce a new tax on vaping products of at least ZAR 2.90 per millilitre from 1 January 2023. A new tax will also be introduced on beer powders," he said.
According to the report, the National Treasury said in its Budget Review document that following public consultations, the government proposes to apply a flat excise duty rate of at least ZAR 2.90 per millilitre to both nicotine and non-nicotine solutions. "The proposal will be included in the 2022 Taxation Laws Amendment Bill for further consultation before being introduced from 1 January 2023."
