Number of smokers hits 1.1 billion worldwide

A worldwide study published in The Lancet has recorded the highest ever number of smokers with 1.1 billion people in 2019.

Findings published in The Lancet stem from data on 3,625 global surveys with data gathered from 204 countries as part of the Global Burden of Diseases2019 study.
Globally, there were 1.14 billion current smokers in 2019. Age-standardised prevalence of current use of smoking tobacco among individuals aged 15 years and older was 32.7 per cent among males and 6.62 per cent among females. The study found that in many countries reductions in prevalence have not kept pace with population growth. As a result, the number of smokers globally has increased steadily each year since 1990, when there were 0.99 billion smokers globally.
7.41 trillion cigarette-equivalents of tobacco were consumed in 2019, amounting to 20.3 billion cigarette-equivalents consumed each day worldwide. China accounted for more than a third of the world's tobacco consumption (2.72 trillion). Countries with the highest consumption per person in 2019 were mostly in Europe, with Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Greece all having consumption exceeding 2,350 cigarette-equivalents per person.
The ten countries with the largest number of tobacco smokers in 2019, together comprising nearly two-thirds of the global tobacco smoking population, were China, India, Indonesia, the US, Russia, Bangladesh, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam, and the Philippines. 30 per cent (341 million) of 1.14 billion smokers worldwide lived in China in 2019, according to the study.
