Starting September 2018, all tobacco products and cigarette packs will have to include a toll-free quitline number printed on the packaging, The Times of India reported.

Counsellors answering the helpline will help advise smokers on how to quit smoking. The packs will also carry the health warning sentences “tobacco causes cancer” and “tobacco causes painful death” in white font on a red background starting September 2018, The Times of India reported.
Furthermore, two new pictures of tobacco-related illnesses will be ran on tobacco products for 12 months starting September 2018. The pictures include a woman suffering from mouth cancer and a man with a feeding tube and jaw and neck cancer. According to the report, these new rules will be called the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Second Amendment Rules, 2018.
U S Vishal Rao, member of high power committee, tobacco control, Government of Karnataka was quoted as saying, “The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2016-17 had mentioned that 85 per cent of cigarette buyers had thought about quitting the habit soon after they saw the 85 per cent pictorial warning. This has made an impact. By publishing the quitline number, we are taking one more step towards a tobacco-free India.”
