THE NETHERLANDS
Only tobacconists to sell tobacco products

The Dutch government is planning to ban smoking on playgrounds and sports parks as well as allow only tobacconists to sell tobacco products in the future, reports the NL Times.

Sources close the Cabinet said that the government is planning to reduce the amount of stores allowed to sell cigarettes and that from 2032, only tobacconists will be allowed to sell tobacco products. From 2024, supermarkets in the Netherlands will no longer be allowed to sell cigarettes and the Cabinet plans to stop petrol stations and convenience stores from selling tobacco products after 2030.
The government also intends to ban smoking at playground and sports parks starting in 2025. Furthermore, next week, the Cabinet will discuss tobacco product prices, reports the NL Times. Over the next two years, a pack of cigarettes will go up in price by EUR 1.20 on average in an attempt to make more people quit and less people start smoking.
However, in the past, the increase in price of a packet of cigarettes has gone hand in hand with wages increasing so that it is unclear whether a new price hike will make a difference.
