The Health Ministry said graphic warnings will be mandated on three-quarters of the surface areas of tobacco product packaging from 1 Sept, the Myanmar Times said.
Chewing tobacco mixed with betel nuts is the most common form of tobacco use, a habit practised by more than 43 per cent of the adult population, the newspaper said on its website. About 26 per cent are smokers, the Times said.
A public consultation is planned to help the government decide on 10 warning pictures, the newspaper said. A ban on product descriptions such as ‘light’, ‘low rise’ and ‘mild’ also would be implemented.
