Plain packaging has been rolled out in Thailand, which has earned the country praise from The World Health Organisation (WHO), reports the Bangkok Post.

The decision to enforce plain packaging was made back in September and has now been fully implemented and made compulsory. The standardised packaging features graphic images that highlight the hazards of smoking as well as the logo-free brand name written in plain font, according to the Bangkok Post.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has praised Thailand for its strong tobacco control policy and has commended the country for taking a step in the right direction. Dr Suwanchai, chief of the Department of Disease Control said, “Thailand is the first country in Asia to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes, demonstrating the country’s efforts to promote public health and well-being.”
According to the Bangkok Post, shops still selling old packets face a THB 40,000 (USD 1,324) fine.
