The Ministry of Health has proposed changes to tobacco laws that would see all tobacco products sold in standardised packaging and larger pictorial warnings introduced, Channel News Asia reported.

The ministry said it intends to table the changes early in 2019 and, if enacted, the proposed amendments could take effect in 2020. Cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, beedies, loose tobacco leaves and RYO products would be sold in standardised packs, the news agency said.
The standardised packaging proposed would see all products sold in drab dark brown packs with a standardised font. Logos, colours, brand images and promotional information would be stripped from packs and pictorial warnings would increase in size from 50 per cent to 75 per cent of the packaging surface.
A transitional period would be set to allow manufacturers to sell old stock, the news agency said.
