Newspoll research conducted for The Weekend Australian found the proportion of Australians who back the plain/packaging for cigarettes has fallen to 48 per cent, while opposition has risen to 38 per cent.
This contrasts with research done for Cancer Council Australia, also conducted by Newspoll, which was released at the end of May and put support at 59 per cent and opposition at 24 per cent.
Despite the erosion of public backing, politicians from both main parties and health experts vowed to push ahead with the legislation, which will require all tobacco products to be sold in plain packs, with the brand and product name in a standard colour, standard position and standard font, from January 2012.
