Cigarettes in the Netherlands must be sold in plain packages from 1 October, reports NU.nl.
Only the brand name and brand variant may still be on the packet and only in neutral letters. The rest of the packaging is for the most part green-brown and consists of warnings and other legal requirements, a barcode and information about the producer, the report said.
This rule will apply for cigarettes and loose tobacco from 1 October 2020. For other products such as cigars and e-cigarettes plain packaging will be required from 1 January 2022. Sellers are given a year to sell their old stocks.
From 1 October, train stations will also be smoke-free. The stricter rules follow earlier measures this year. For example, excise duties have already been increased twice in 2020, smoking is banned on school grounds and supermarkets have to put their smoking goods out of sight.
