The cabinet of ministers has given the government authorisation to implement plain packaging of tobacco products in an effort to reduce tobacco use in the country, ColomboPage reported.

The standardised packaging of tobacco products "will only two colors or black and white" and any specific information such as product name, trade name and quantity of the product will be prohibited on the packaging unless authorised by the government.
In a statement, the cabinet said that standardised packaging of tobacco products has helped reduce the sale of tobacco products considerably in other countries, according to ColomboPage.
Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Dr Rajitha Senaratne, instructed the government to amend the country’s National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, No.27 of 2006 to include plain packaging, according to the report.
