Denmark’s plans to ban people born after 2010 from buying nicotine products will not be able to go ahead due to EU laws, reports EURACTIV.
The plan had been suggested as part of a health reform package back in March, but its feasibility was immediately questioned. Health Minister Magnus Heunicke admitted that there would be legal challenges especially since Denmark was the only country worldwide suggesting such a drastic move. Heunicke has since confirmed that the plan to ban the sale of nicotine products for those born after 2010 was not going ahead due to EU rules making it impossible for member states to ban or restrict tobacco marketing, reports EURACTIV.
“The ministry of health, therefore, considers that a ban on the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to people born in 2010 or later would require an amendment to the European Tobacco Products Directive”, Heunicke said.
The plan had also faced opposition from the Danish Folketing with the Liberal Alliance, the Conservatives and the Danish People’s Party, saying that people should be able to decide for themselves.
