PM USA’s Marlboro retains retail share on lower volume

Philip Morris USA’s best seller Marlboro boosted its share of a shrinking US cigarette market by 0.2 percentage points to 43.6 percent but shipments fell 5.5 per cent in the first quarter, parent company Altria said.

Sales of smokeable products fell 2.6 per cent to near USD 5 billion (EUR 3.8 billion) as overall cigarette shipments fell 5.2 per cent to 29.5 billion sticks and cigar shipments nearly 17 per cent to 273 million units, Altria said. The business quarter ended 31 March had one less shipping day than the comparable quarter in 2012.
Receipt of USD 483 million in disputed tobacco settlement payments boosted profit, and prompted Altria to raise its forecast for earnings per share this year by 15 cents to a range of USD 2.49 – 2.55.
Altria also announced its Nu Mark subsidiary will introduce an electronic cigarette in the second half of this year.
Operating company income at the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co subsidiary rose 15.6 per cent as the Copenhagen moist snuff brand gained market share. Sales without excise tax gained 3.1 per cent to USD 364 million, Altria said. (ci)
