Philip Morris International (PMI) welcomed passage of the world’s first international protocol to combat illicit trade in tobacco products, saying national policies must follow to make the treaty a success.
“The long term solution to this challenge lies in governments implementing effective policies and providing sufficient enforcement resources to disrupt the global illegal supply chain through which these unlawful products are manufactured, transported and sold,” PMI said in a statement.
On 12 Nov, delegates to the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) meeting in Korea approved a protocol on controlling illicit trade that proposes global monitoring of the flow of tobacco goods. (ci)
