Philip Morris International (PMI) filed an application with US regulators seeking Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) status for its iQOS heat-not-burn device, the company said
PMI said it expected the Food and Drug Administration’s Centre for Tobacco Products would take a minimum of 60 days to determine whether to accept the application. MRTP status would allow marketing of the product in the US with fewer restrictions than normally placed on tobacco products.
Several MRTP applications, including one for snus from Swedish Match, have been filed with FDA, however the agency has yet to officially sanction a modified risk tobacco product.
